JOHNSTOWN IN BLACK & WHITE
Johnstown In Black & White is an ongoing photoessay project. My goal is to document "disappearing Johnstown" by taking pictures of old and unique places
and things. Click

JOHNSTOWN, THEN AND NOW
Luke Swank  was  a scion of Johnstown's successful Swank family. On the left, above, is a
photograph that Swank captured in 1930; on the right is my attempt to take a photograph of the
same scene in 2006.
Fifty years after Swank's photograph, Lee Friedlander took a photo in Franklin Borough for his
book,
Factory Valleys.
These side-by-side comparisons clearly illustrate the decline of basic steelmaking in the Johnstown area.
